藤原正彦の「国家の品格」を読みました。
数年前のベストセラーです。
西洋の論理の世界は実は間違いだ。
自由と平和なんて嘘っぱちだ。
日本の情緒や武士道こそ大切にすべきものだ。
というお話で、なるほどベストセラーになるのも
わかる気がする本でした。
この中に英語に関する記述があったので拾ってみましょう。

産業革命がイギリスそしてアメリカで起こった結果、
世界中の子供たちがなきながら英語を勉強している。
侵略者の言葉を学ばなければいけないのですから。
もしも私の愛する日本が世界を征服していたら、
今ごろ世界中の子供達が泣きながら日本語を勉強
していたはずです。まことに残念です。（13ページ）

日本人が英語下手なのは、小学校から教えないからでも、
中高の英語教師のせいでもありません。主な理由は2つあり、
一つは英語と日本語があまりに異なることです。（中略）
もう一つは、日本に住む日本人は、日常生活で英語を必要
としないからです。母国語だけで済むというのは植民地に
ならなかったことの証で、むしろ名誉なことです。
TOEFLのテストで日本人がアジアでビリ、というのは先人
の努力に感謝すべき、誇るべきことなのです。（145ページ）
